Preventing Harmful Sun Exposure Begins in the Pharmacy

Ft. Worth , Tx With certain classes of medications increasing a person’s sensitivity to the sun, Albertsons’ pharmacists caution shoppers to read the warnings on their prescription bottles and over-the-counter medications.  Certain medications, called sun-sensitizing drugs, such as birth-control pills, antibiotics, allergy drugs, pain relievers and high-blood-pressure medicines, can cause the person taking them to experience enhanced exposure to the sun.

“With skin cancer as the most diagnosed cancer in the US, it’s important that people understand the importance of sun protection.  And even though warnings are often on the bottle, many people do not understand that the medications they take can enhance the sun’s harmful effect on their skin,” explains Raymond McCall, Vice President of Pharmacy Operations for Albertson’s, LLC.  “This summer, we’re advising all of our shoppers to talk with their pharmacists to ensure they are adequately protecting themselves from the sun.”

Please visit your neighborhood Albertsons store to talk with your pharmacist about sun sensitizing drugs and the risk of sun exposure as it relates to prescription and over-the-counter medications.
